scholastic bowl (academic
bowl)
Are you a fast and accurate thinker?
Can you recall facts and information quickly?
If so, we need your expertise!
Test your knowledge and represent your school in academic
competition tournaments, dual meets, state playoffs, and yes,
even challenge the faculty! Whether you
are an 'expert' in one field/subject or you possess a wide area of
knowledge, Scholastic Bowl is for you!
This
competition is a group event. A team of 5 PCHS students
competes academically against a team of 5 students from another
school. When the ‘Toss Up’ question is read, the first student
to buzz in gets to answer the question. If that student has an
incorrect answer, the challenging team has an opportunity to
answer the question. The individual/team that answers the
question correctly then has an opportunity to go into a ‘Bonus
Round’. In this round, the team of 5 gets
30 seconds to confer and answer 4 questions. The team
accumulates points for what is correct and the other team will
have an opportunity to gather points for the remaining
questions. Then on to the next ‘Toss Up’ question. This type
of process continues for 24 Toss Up and/or Bonus questions.
For PCHS to
win, a team effort is required where students answer questions
(individually and in a group). Scores are tallied during each
match, and the top performing schools receive awards at the end
of the season.
The official
Scholastic Bowl season takes place from November to March.
Before the season begins, we practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
after school, for about an hour. When the official season
begins, competitions are held on Tuesdays after school (at the
varying schools in the league) and we hold practices on
Thursdays. There may be an occasion for a weekend meet. While
we typically compete 'locally' with other Catholic schools in
our region, we have also competed against neighboring public
schools for sectionals.
