CHURCH HISTORY ASSIGNMENTS

Written Assignments

There will be two types of written assignments for this class, a journal and two projects.  Follow the directions below to complete the assignments.

 

Church History Portfolio

        For each chapter, students will complete an entry concerning with a topic in the respective chapter.  The entry will consist of an artifact accompanied with a brief summary and reflection.  The artifact is to be either an image or a selection of text and is to be included with its summary.  The article and summary are to be typed and placed in a 3 hole punch report cover. 

        The summary/reflection must also be typed and placed in the report cover.  The first half is a summary of the artifact and should address the question as to who and what the artifact concerns.  The second half is a reflection based on how the artifacts connects with the chapter material.  The summary/reflection must be one doubled-spaced page in length.

        Portfolio entries will be collected twice during both quarters and will be graded using the following categories:

                   Summary - 30%

                   Connection - 30%

                   Format - 10%

                   Proper Lengths for Entries - 20%

                   Grammar - 10%

 

 

3rd Quarter Project

Students are to write a 2-3 page paper covering the life and theology of St. Augustine.  All papers are due Friday, October 5th.  Papers may be submitted in class or emailed to koliver@providencecatholic.org.  Late papers will receive a reduction of one letter grade for each day.

Choose one of the following topics:

    1) Discuss the conversion of St. Augustine.  What did it involve?  What can we as young adults learn from his experiences? 

    2) Identify one of the most important teachings of St. Augustine?  Why did he stress this point?  How can we integrate this teaching into our lives?

    3) Describe the Rule of St. Augustine.  What guidelines did St. Augustine give to live of life of service to God?  How did this rule influence the first Augustinians?  How can we integrate this rule in our lives?

In addition to the textbook and A Man for Our Times, two sources must be consulted.  Cite passages and quotations appropriately.  All papers must be double-spaced and written in proper MLA form. 

All papers must be submitted through Turn-it-in.com before they will be graded.  More information will follow regarding this policy.

 

4th Quarter Project

Students are to write a 2-3 page paper concerning a major figure/event in Catholic Church History from the Council of Trent through the papacy of John Paul II.  Topics must be approved by Mr. Oliver.  Papers are due TBA either emailed to koliver@providencecatholic.org or submitted in class.  The grades of late papers will be reduced.

Each paper/project should make use of at least 3 non-textbook sources.  Be sure to select sources carefully as some sites may portray false information.  Resources must be listed on a Works Cited page.  The rest of the project should follow proper MLA format.
