  • ALLTHEWEB (search engine)
Another comprehensive search engine (like Google) which indexes web pages.  Offers access in 49 languages and claims to be the largest engine.  Indexes not only web pages but multimedia, audio and FTP files, as well as PDF and MS Word files.

  • Direct Search  (meta-search engine)
Direct Search is a growing compilation of links to the search interfaces of resources that contain data not easily or entirely searchable/accessible from general search tools like Alta Vista, Google, or Hotbot. Material "hidden" from the general search tools is said to reside on the Invisible Web. This tool helps you search that "invisible web".

  • INFOMINE  (meta-search engine)
"INFOMINE is a librarian-built virtual library of Internet resources relevant to faculty, students, and [researchers].  It contains useful ... resources such as databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, mailing lists, online library card catalogs, articles, directories of researchers, and [more]."  It is built and maintained by librarians from the University of California, Wake Forest University, California State University, the University of Detroit - Mercy, and others.  It is constantly being updated and changed so as to keep it useful and accurate.

  • Profusion  (meta-search engine)
Amazing customizable meta-search engine for reaching those really hard to find places in the invisible web.  Allows you to utilize thirteen large search engines plus millions of databases and other types of resources which the regular web can't see.  Very powerful and easy to use.  You can use pick lists to select categories in which to search, or you can create traditional boolean searches.  Very versatile and massive.

  • Landmarks for Schools:
Now provides links to information building blocks: Web sites, pages, and interactive tools that provide information in the form of a raw material. The information and data that Landmarks... points to can be imported into other information processing tools and used in the meaningful construction of unique and valuable information products, within the context of social studies, science, mathematics, and other disciplines.

  • ASK.COM   www.ask.com    returns results in subject clusters.

Invisible Web:

Searching the Invisible Web

"Everyone" knows that the Internet is a growing, living entity that cannot be measured accurately.  "Everyone also realizes that anyone can put anything they want on the web from anywhere in the world.

But, do YOU know...

·         that when you "search the web" with any of the traditional search "engines" you can only get to a very small percentage of the web?

·         that the MOST you can see using engines like Google, Alltheweb, Altavista, or even Yahoo is about 20% of the entire web?

·         that each search engine looks at different parts of the web?

·         that many engines are paid to put specific websites higher on your hit list than others?

·         that many engines look only at the first or second layer of a website for your keywords which is why you sometimes don't get a hit on a valuable site?

·         using META-ENGINES you can enlarge your "net" of hits?

·         not all search engines are created equal?

·         some of the search tools you use aren't even search "engines" but directories?

·         there are thousands of search engines available for your use, some for specific types of information?

If you didn't know, then here is your chance to learn some wonderful skills at improving your searches and the results!  If you did, then take some time to refresh your knowledge and update yourself.  Some things may have changed!

Below are a number of links to explanations for the Invisible Web and how to search it more effectively.  Each link offers explanations, links, and training.  If you take the time to look at any one of them you will improve your ability and skill to search...and as a result produce better work and get better grades.  What more could you want?
