Boys Basketball
A huge thank-you from the
Basketball program to all who came out and supported the team during
it’s Regional Championship victory (63-53) over Lemont. The night was
an awesome display of Celtic Pride. Also, congratulations to Brian Oddo
and Jay Ramadurai as they advanced in the Country Company Three Point
Showdown. Brian and Jay will shoot Tuesday before the Sectional
Semi-Final.
Tuesday, March 6 the Celtics will
take on Hillcrest High School in the Sectional Semi-Final. The game
tips at 7:30pm and is at Rich East High School. Doors will open at
6:30pm and the 3 point contest will start at 6:50. Tickets are $5.
Let’s fill Rich East and display our Celtic Pride once again!
Mt. Carmel Games Rescheduled
The games that were originally slated for Friday 1/20/12 have been rescheduled to
Tuesday, February 21 at Mt. Carmel. Sophomores play at 5:00 PM, Varsity at 6:30 PM. (These are updated game times.) Come support the Celtics!

1/4/12 - Christmas Recap
Before the Christmas break, the Celtics were able to put a 5 game winning streak together going into the Hinsdale South Christmas Tournament. Along the way, the Celtics notched wins over Riverside Brookfield, Bishop MacNamara, St. Laurence, Nazareth Academy, and Marian Catholic. Heading into the Christmas break the Celtics posted a record of 7-2 and garnered a 5th seed for the Hinsdale South tournament. During that 5 game stretch, the Celtics were really clamping down on defense and sharing the basketball on the offensive end.
The Celtics headed into the Hinsdale South tournament tabbed as the dark horse by the Chicago Sun-Times but fell in opening round action to the Sandburg Eagles. Bouncing back the next morning, the Celtics defeated Downers Grove North and earned the opportunity to play the host Hornets from Hinsdale South. In a extremely hard fought battle, that saw the Celtics fight their way back from double digit deficits to tie the game at 51, the Hornets held on for a 76-66 defeat of the Celtics. On the tournament’s final day of action, the Celtics defeated Glenbrook South by a score of 67-54.
The sophomore Celtics took 2nd place in the Plainfield Central Holiday tournament, while the freshmen Celtics pushed their winning streak to 10 games captured the Championship of the Nazareth Academy Christmas Tournament by defeating Catholic League rival Fenwick in the championship game. All levels are looking forward to a great 2nd half of the season.

Brother Rice Game Recap
In the Chicago Catholic season opener in front of a
rambunctious crowd in New Lenox, Brother Rice overcame a 4 point deficit
with 30 seconds to play to top the Celtics 45-44. It was an exciting
game from the opening tip until the final horn. Kevin Kozan’s final
shot and subsequent tip by Mike Marietti came up just short.
The Celtics opened the game with a 6-0. Mike Marietti
immediately established himself as a presence inside. Brother Rice came
back with a 5-0 run of their own. The Celtics extended the lead to 9-5
before Marietti picked-up his second foul and was forced to watch the
rest of the half from the bench. At one point in the second quarter,
Brother Rice held a 14 point lead. With Marietti in foul trouble the
Celtics down 12, they decided to hold for the last shot of the half.
With 7 seconds left in the first half, Kevin Kozan drove hard to the
basket drawing defenders from all over. Kozan kicked the ball out to
Brian Oddo for a 3 in the corner as time expired in the first half.
Down 9 to start the second half, the Celtics ratcheted
up the defense that led to some Brother Rice turnovers. The Celtic
pressure defense was led by a ball-hawking Kevin Kozan. Eventually, the
Celtics clawed their way to a 5 point fourth quarter lead. Then Brother
Rice turned up their defensive pressure which sparked their comeback in
the last 30 seconds.
Mike Marietti led the Celtics once again in scoring with
15 points in very limited minutes due to foul trouble. Kevin Kozan
added 12 while Brian Oddo contributed 10 points of his own. The loss
dropped the Celtics to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in Chicago Catholic
League play. The Celtics wish to send a big thank-you out to the
boisterous crowd that was in attendance for this exciting game.
Before the Varsity game, the Sophomore Celtics improved
their record to 5-0 and by beating Brother Rice 39-38. The Freshman
Celtics had a busy week competing in the Romeoville Freshmen Tournament
and taking on Brother Rice on Saturday morning. In the Romeoville
Tournament, the freshmen went 2-1 defeating Romeoville and Joliet
Catholic while losing to Lockport on the opening night of the
tournament. The freshmen extended their record to 3-1 by defeating
Brother Rice 44-29. The freshmen return to action Tuesday night at
Riverside Brookfield while the Varsity and sophomore teams host
Riverside Brookfield on Wednesday. The sophomore game starts at 5:45
and the Varsity game at 7:30. On Friday, the Celtics will host Bishop
MacNamara again at 5:45 and 7:30. Come out and see some exciting
basketball.
Thanksgiving Tournament Recap
The Varsity basketball team competed in the WJOL
Thanksgiving Tournament held at the University of St. Francis. The
Celtics finished the tournament with a 2-1 record. The Celtics defeated
Joliet Central and Romeoville, while their only loss came on opening
night to Lockport.
In Game 1 of the tournament, the Celtics lost to
Lockport by a score of 41-30. The Celtics struggled to score, shooting
24% from the field on 10-42 shooting. The Celtics also had a tough
night from the Free Throw line shooting 46% on 10-22 from the charity
stripe. While the Celtics struggled on offense, the defense was tough
as nails, only allowed 41 points to a potent Lockport offense. Mike
Marietti (Noonan Academy) led the Celtics with 12 points and 8 rebounds.
The Celtics bounced back for their first win in Game 2
of the tournament against Joliet Central by a score of 50-44. The
Celtic defense continued to set the tone, holding Joliet Central to 28%
shooting from the field. On this night, the Celtics shot much better
from the field going 14-30 (47%). The Celtics were given a spark off
the bench by Junior Tom O’Halloran (St. Cyril). Again, Mike Marietti
(Noonan Academy) led scorers with 15 points and Senior Joe Batis (St.
Raymond, Joliet) chipped in 5 points.

On the tournament’s final night, the Celtics defeated
Romeoville by a score of 44-38 improving their record to 2-1 on the
young season. Kevin Kozan (Aux Sable), Brian Oddo (Liberty Jr. High),
and Miles Boykin (Central Middle School) turned in great performances.
Kozan finished the night with 12 points, 10 of which came in the second
half. Brian Oddo turned in 9 points and contributed 10 rebounds and 5
assists. Freshman Miles Boykin added 6 points and five rebounds. The
Celtics won the Jeremy Izzo Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a
row.
The Sophomore Celtics had a great week at the Ottawa
Township Thanksgiving Tournament. The Sophomore Celtics won the
tournament by posting a 4-0 record, defeating Ottawa, Metamora, Minooka,
and Pontiac. In the Metamora game, the Celtics overcame at 25 point
first half deficit to win the game 75-69.
The Freshmen team will begin action this week at the
Romeoville Tournament with games Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The
Varsity and Sophomore teams return to action on Friday, December 2 at
home vs. Brother Rice. Game times are 5:45 and 7:30. The Freshmen team
and JV team will travel to Brother Rice Saturday morning.
