Dedication and blessing of the Rev. Richard J. McGrath, O.S.A. Center

(New Lenox) – Rev. John Sotak, O.S.A., Prior of the Augustinian community at Providence Catholic High School, blessed the newly dedicated Rev. Richard J. McGrath, O.S.A. Center during a special ceremony in late October.  Originally a convent that housed the religious sisters from 1962-1990, this building is home to the Providence Catholic Children’s Academy (PCCA), formerly Providence Early Education Center.  The second floor of the building houses the Providence Catholic Advancement, Accounting and Tuition offices.

Rev. McGrath, President of Providence Catholic High School, founded the early education center in 1992 to serve the religious and educational needs of children between the ages of 3 and 5 who are members of the Catholic community in New Lenox and surrounding areas.  The school’s strong sense of community, rooted in Christian values, unites children, families and the faculty.

PCCA fosters a positive self-image in each child.  The curriculum encourages the development of the “whole child,” enables each child to reach his or her full human potential and become a fully functioning Christian adult.

Providence Catholic Drama Club to Present “Footlight Frenzy”

(New Lenox) Providence Catholic High School’s Drama Club will present its fall play, “Footlight Frenzy” from Thursday, November 5 through Sunday, November 8 at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Theatre in Joliet.  Performances will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.  Tickets are $8.00 each ($5.00 for students and senior citizens). Tickets may be purchased at the door.  Call (815) 485-2136, ext.3323 with questions or for ticket information.

In a desperate attempt to save their bankrupt "School for Unusual Children", an inexperienced PTA group valiantly mounts an ambitious benefit play, written by a “has been” Broadway director. His near hysterical direction and the group's questionable talent turn the production into a shambles. Everything that can go wrong does as the scenes shift back and forth from the real tribulations of the performers to the play they are "performing", and it is hard to tell which is sillier. This is fast and furious theatrical fun of the first order, with us watching the fun from the "back" of the stage!
Footlight Frenzy is written by Ron House, Diz White, Alan Shearman and Bud Slocumb. The show is based on "Fleeting Moment' by House, White, Shearman, Mark Blankenfield, Brandie Kemp and Mitchell Kreindel.

The play is directed by Ms. Dee Hamilton, PCHS Drama Director.  The cast includes:  Mike Murdie of Manhattan as Paul (Nicky), Ryan Hinsdale of Mokena as Alex (Chaz), Martin Moran of Homer Glen as Tony (Uncle Julian), Sean McSwain of Tinley Park as Benny (Johnny Chicago), Abbie Welsch of Plainfield as Laura (Addie Starr), Alyse Gray of New Lenox as Debbie (Gwen), Andrea Massimilian of Orland Park as Understudy for Debbie and Laura, Mike Guidotti of Plainfield as Understudy for Paul and Benny.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of an AP Scholar Award.  The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.

At Providence Catholic:

One student qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. This student is Patrick Ward of Homer Glen.

Six students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Daniel Burke of Lemont, Caitlin Day of Homer Glen, Matthew Doran of Oak Forest, Brian Kramer of Joliet, Caitlin Myron of Orland Park and Patrick Ward of Homer Glen.

Through more than 30 different college-level courses and exams, AP provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to earn college credit or advanced placement and stand out in the college admissions process. Each exam is developed by a committee of college and university faculty and AP teachers, ensuring that AP exams are aligned with the same high standards expected by college faculty at some of the nation’s leading liberal arts and research institutions. More than 3,600 colleges and universities annually receive AP grades. Over 90 percent of four-year colleges in the United States provide credit and/or placement for qualifying exam grades. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

The College Board is a not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. Founded in 1900, the association is composed of more than 5,600 schools, colleges, universities, and other educational organizations. Each year, the College Board serves seven million students and their parents, 23,000 high schools, and 3,800 colleges through major programs and services in college readiness, college admissions, guidance, assessment, financial aid, enrollment, and teaching and learning. Among its best-known programs are the SAT®, the PSAT/NMSQT®, and the Advanced Placement Program® (AP®). The College Board is committed to the principles of excellence and equity, and that commitment is embodied in all of its programs, services, activities, and concerns.

Providence Catholic Hosts Annual Fall Blood Drive

(New Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School’s largest student organization, the Augustinian Youth Ministry (AYM), recently held its annual Fall Blood Drive.  The students, faculty members and even parents at Providence Catholic donated 67 units of blood, which may help more than 200 people in need.

The Augustinian Youth Ministry is a service-based student organization with more than 400 members.  Through a number of drives which include blood, clothing, food and toy, the students in AYM are doing a remarkable job in giving back to the community and in living the Christian values they have learned at Providence Catholic High School.

Senior James Jaeger of Minooka and junior Kevin Graham of Homer Glen made a special blood donation known as a Double Red Cell (DRC) collection.  During a DRC donation, a single, sterile needle is inserted to the donor’s arm and blood is withdrawn directly into a cell separator. The whole blood is separated into red blood cells and plasma. The red blood cells are then drawn into two separate bags, while the plasma and saline solution is returned to the donor.  This “double” procedure may help two individuals in need.

(New Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School hosted the Tom Dedin Alumni Baseball Reunion on Saturday, September 19.  More than thirty alumni baseball players from the “Dedin Years” (1965 – 1976) gathered at the newly renovated Tom Dedin Field on the school’s campus.  The alumni exchanged stories and memories from their high school days with Coach Dedin and toured the baseball grounds.   “There have been many improvements over the years that have been made to this field, but the one constant has been the Celtic spirit,” said Mark Smith, 1988 PCHS alumni baseball player and current Head Baseball Coach.  Coach Smith and former teammate, Doug Ternik, Class of 1989 and current PCHS Athletic Director, joined Dedin in welcoming the alumni and their families back home to Providence Catholic.  “This was a special day for alumni to pay tribute to their baseball coach.  We are extremely grateful to Coach Dedin for his leadership as the school’s first Athletic Director and founder of our athletic programs,” added Ternik.

Providence Catholic Honors the Augustinians for 25 Years of Faithful Leadership

(New Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School honored the Augustinians of the Midwest Province of our Mother of Good Counsel for their 25 faithful years of service to the school on August 27 at DiNolfo’s in Homer Glen.  More than 250 guests, which included alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the school, paid tribute to the tremendous leadership the Augustinians have brought to Providence Catholic High School.

Ed Barrett, Director of Institutional Advancement at PCHS, welcomed guests and spoke of the Augustinian influences on his life.  The Very Rev. William Lego, O.S.A., Prior Provincial, delivered the invocation.  Following dinner, Rev. John Merkelis, O.S.A., Pastoral Director at PCHS,  explained the meaning behind the Cor Unum award.  Retired Bishop Joseph Imesch presented the 2009 Cor Unum award, the school’s most prestigious award, to the Augustinians.  The medallion encompasses the Kairos cross with the heart, flame and arrow of the Augustinian crest embossed over it.  The motto, “Cor Unum” is Latin for “one heart.”  On the reverse side of the medallion the inscription reads "One Heart...in Ministry...in Mission...in Family."

In addition, Steve Morrissette, President of First Community Bank of Joliet and 1979 Providence alumnus,  presented Rev. Richard McGrath, O.S.A., President of Providence Catholic with a special gift in appreciation for his 25 years of steadfast leadership and dedication to the school.  “I am humbled by the recognition,” said McGrath.  “But it’s never been about me, it’s been about us and us building a better Providence Catholic.”
