Providence Catholic Freshman Takes Home
the
Gold at State Science Exhibition
(New
Lenox) Don Sebestyen, Principal of Providence Catholic High
School is pleased to announce that freshman Matthew Metelak
received the Best in Category of Aerospace Science and took home
the Gold Award (First Place) at the Illinois Junior Academy of
Science State Exhibition, which was held at the University of
Illinois on May 7. “We are extremely proud of Matt and his
remarkable accomplishments. His ambition is commendable and we
are thrilled to have him as a student here at Providence,”
offered Sebestyen.
Sponsored by Providence Catholic, Metelak presented “Which Angle
of Attack Generates the Most Lift?” The purpose of his project
was to determine whether an airfoil (wing) of an airplane
produced more lift at a high angle of attack or low angle of
attack. Using a leaf blower, a miniature balsa airfoil and a
digital scale, Matt was able to measure the amount of lift
generated in digital grams. He concluded that “as the angle of
attack of the airfoil was increased, the coefficient of lift was
also increased. This was true until the critical angle of attack
was reached and above which the airfoil no longer produced
lift. When this occurred, the airfoil stalled. The most lift
of my symmetrical airfoil was produced at an angle of attack of
nineteen degrees.”
Metelak added, “I am grateful for Providence Catholic and their
sponsorship to participate in this exhibition. It is my goal to
become a pilot and this project seemed most appropriate.”
Matthew is the son of Gary and Sue Metelak of Homer Glen.

Providence Catholic Teacher Travels to
Poland in Remembrance of the Holocaust
(New
Lenox) In early May, Amy Tryner, Providence Catholic Theology
Teacher, traveled to Poland for “March of the Living 2005,”
where she paid tribute to Holocaust survivors, victims and those
who fought for freedom. Sponsored by the Anti-Defamation
League, Tryner traveled with other Catholic Educators from
throughout the United States.
“This experience has truly changed me forever. A person cannot
stand in a gas chamber or next to the ovens, and walk away from
that experience the same. I have seen the effects of hatred and
anti-Semitism during World War II, and I will work hard to make
sure it can never happen again. I will never forget the lessons
this trip has taught me,” offered Tryner.
This
event marked sixty years after the end of World War II and
brought together more than 18,000 people from around the
world. Furthermore, this gathering inspired a community of
people from different religions, cultures and countries to come
together on the anniversary of two of the most significant
events in the twentieth century; the Holocaust and the end of
Nazi tyranny. On May 5, travelers assembled at Auschwitz to
observe Yom Hashoah, (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and to honor
those who lost their lives and those who survived.

Providence Catholic Hosts College Fair
(New
Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School recently hosted more
than thirty colleges and universities to be a part of its annual
“Mini-College Fair.” Sophomore and junior students, along with
parents were able to obtain specific information that will help
students begin narrowing their choices for schools to attend
upon graduation. Because Providence Catholic annually sends 99%
of its graduates on to higher education, this was an important
day for these students and parents.
Upon
entering the fair, students were given a list of potential
questions to ask the various school representatives; however,
this list was used by students simply as a reference. Pam Ryan,
PCHS Director of Guidance, was happy to report the positive
feedback she received from school representatives. “Several
representatives complimented Providence on the positive
impression that our students gave and how well-prepared they
were with the college selection process, which tells us that we
are leading our students in the right direction,” commented
Ryan.
Daniel Potempa, PCHS Math Teacher and a 1997 PCHS alum, visited
the table of his university alma mater and commented, “When I
was student, this college fair guided me to narrow down my
choices. The college representatives were very informative and
helped me realize the type of school I was looking for.”
In
addition to the college fair, Providence Catholic hosts a number
of representatives from national colleges and universities
throughout the school year to help students explore as many
academic options as possible.

students to grow spiritually, academically and socially. What
sets Providence aside, however, are the genuine acts of
kindness, compassion and unity of its student body. A portion
of Providence’s mission statement reads, “We are a service
oriented community,” which is demonstrated by students in many
ways; in particular through the “A Call To Serve” Program
(A.C.T.S.).
Michael Rassman, PCHS English Teacher and Junior A.C.T.S.
Director, was thrilled to report that his juniors completed more
than 5,000 service hours with 58% of the class exceeding their
minimum requirement. “I am so proud of these students who took
this ‘assignment’ as an opportunity to serve others, rather than
an inconvenient imposition. They truly put their faith into
action,” commented Rassman.
Students volunteered their time and service in a variety of
ways, including tutoring, coaching, teaching and more. “It felt
great to share my faith with the kids while helping them develop
their own faith. I believe that this experience was beneficial
to my growth as a student at Providence,” offered Kathleen
Courtney who volunteered her time teaching religious education.
Jordan Farrell coached children at athletic camps and added, “I
felt honored to give back time and effort to PCHS for all that
it has given me. Helping someone else is truly greater than
being helped.”
A.C.T.S. Program gives students an opportunity to practice their
faith by providing Christian service to either the Providence
community or their Parish community. All class years must
fulfill the minimum required hours, but as seen with this year’s
junior class, serving the community was anything but a
requirement; it was a privilege.

Providence Catholic Welcomes Two New Coaches
(New
Lenox) - Don Sebestyen, Principal of Providence Catholic High
School, announced the appointing of Eileen Copenhaver as the new
Head Girls’ Basketball Coach in late April. Copenhaver spent
eight years as Head Women’s Basketball Coach at the University
of Illinois at Chicago and seven years as Assistant Coach at
Loyola University, her alma mater.
“I
am thrilled to be here and look forward to the opportunity of
coaching the girls and helping them achieve the level of
excellence that Providence upholds. Athletic perseverance is
important, however high academic standing and social
responsibility is demanded from my players. Providence is known
for their strong athletic and academic programs; I am honored to
be a part of keeping this tradition alive,” offered Copenhaver.
Jay
Biesterfeld was named the Head Girls’ Softball Coach this past
fall and is working diligently to improve the girls’ softball
program. As Head Girls’ Softball Coach at Rich South for six
years and seven years as Head Coach for Crete Travel Ball,
Biesterfeld has a tremendous amount of experience and dedication
that has brought out the enthusiasm in these young ladies.
“I
am very proud of my players and their commitment to their
sport. They are hard workers both on and off the field and I am
fortunate to be their coach. Although we have some obstacles to
overcome, I am confident that girls’ softball will work its way
to the top,” commented Biesterfeld.

Providence Catholic Presents "PROMise to Live”
(New Lenox) – On Wednesday, April 27,
Providence Catholic High School held a pre-prom assembly
entitled “PROMise to Live,” which was named by sophomore Tim
Harris. Sponsored by the New Lenox Police Department and Fire
Protection District, the Will County Sheriff’s Office and
Providence Catholic, a mock car crash was staged for the entire
student body to witness the consequences of drinking and
driving.
The
re-enactment included four Providence students (Brendan Kelly,
Steve Shaheen, Kristi Pellegrini and Allison Restko) and a
faculty member (Dan Potempa) who took their acting roles
seriously. To keep the event as realistic as possible, police,
fire, ambulance and a coroner vehicle arrived on the scene with
lights and sirens. The re-enacted fatal crash claimed the life
of one, severely injured three and left one with a criminal
record. The uninjured driver was charged with reckless
homicide, aggravated D.U.I., illegal transportation of alcohol
and possession of alcohol by a minor.
Following the outdoor portion of the assembly, students gathered
in the gymnasium to listen to speakers who offered their
first-hand knowledge and experiences with individuals who chose
to drink and drive. Among these individuals were Paul Kaupas,
Will County Sheriff; James Glasgow, Will County State’s
Attorney; Mark Duke, Assistant Chief of New Lenox Fire
Protection District; Chuck Lyons, Will County Deputy Coroner;
Dwight Lockwood, Illinois Department of Transportation; David
Sutor, Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor and Christena Pirc,
Founder of the Taylor Pirc Video Camera Project and mother of
Taylor who was killed in 1999 by a drunk driver.
This
pre-prom program was designed to create awareness and educate
young people on how one bad decision could destroy their lives
and the lives of those around them. “To get the full effect, I
actually forced myself to believe that this crash had really
happened. I saw the blood, I heard the screams and I felt the
pain that my friends were feeling. I will never forget this and
hope others will do the same,” commented a Providence junior.
Providence is grateful for the coordinated efforts of the
above-mentioned speakers, sponsors, actors, as well as Pam Ryan,
Director of Guidance at PCHS and Sergeant Lora DelBianco, New
Lenox Police who made this program a reality.

Providence Catholic Students Witness Live Open Heart Surgery
(New Lenox) – On April 20, more than
thirty Providence Catholic students witnessed live open heart
surgery as part of a field trip for their Human Physiology and
AP Biology classes. In conjunction with Christ Hospital in Oak
Lawn, students were able to watch the surgery via closed circuit
television at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
Following the surgery, students toured “Body Worlds,” the
anatomical exhibition of real human bodies. This
first-of-its-kind exhibit showed students the anatomy,
physiology and health of human bodies that were preserved
through a remarkable method called “plastination.”
“The
live open heart surgery portion of our visit was amazing! The
“Body Worlds” exhibit was a little creepy, but left me with a
newfound respect for my body and motivation to stay committed to
a healthy lifestyle,” commented Providence senior Stephanie
Peters. The genuine specimens revealed the complexities and
individuality of the body that are difficult to show with
conventional models. The variety of specimens showed how the
body works when it is healthy and how it breaks down when it is
unhealthy. Students were able to view healthy lungs compared to
those of a smoker and a disease-free liver with one showing
hepatocirrhosis. This entire experience was aimed to educate
young people on the power and vulnerability of the human body.

Providence Student Organization Hosts Blood Drive
(New
Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School’s largest student
organization, the Augustinian Youth Ministry (AYM), recently
held its annual Spring Blood Drive in March. The students,
faculty members and even parents at Providence donated nearly
100 units of blood, which will go on to help as many as 300
people in need.
“Every year, the Augustinian Youth Ministry sets a great example
for all of the students in the area as to how important it is to
serve your community and help others in need,” offered Don
Sebestyen, Principal of the high school. “Through a number of
drives which include blood, clothing, food and toy, the students
in AYM are doing a remarkable job in giving back to the
community and in living the Christian values they have learned
throughout the years.” Augustinian Youth Ministry is a
service-based student organization with over 120 members that
hosts a number of activities and events annually to support the
local community.
