Providence Catholic Hosts College Fair

(New Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School recently hosted thirty-five colleges and universities to be a part of its annual “Mini-College Fair.”  Sophomore and junior students, along with parents were able to obtain specific information that will help students begin narrowing their choices for schools to attend upon graduation.  Because Providence Catholic annually sends 98% of its graduates on to higher education, this was an important day for these students and parents.

Upon entering the fair, students were given a list of possible questions to ask the various school representatives; however, this list was used by students simply as a reference.  Pam Ryan, PCHS Director of Guidance, was happy to comment on the positive feedback that she received from school representatives.  “We received a number of compliments from the college representatives on the enthusiasm of our students and their desire to learn more about the college selection process. Furthermore, the representatives remarked on the benefits of including sophomores and parents in the college fair,” stated Ryan.

In addition to the college fair, Providence Catholic hosts a number of representatives from national colleges and universities throughout the school year to help students explore as many academic options as possible.

Foundation “Gives Something Back” at Providence Catholic

(New Lenox) - The Give Something Back Foundation will sponsor two special awards at Providence Catholic High School this spring.  The Give Something Back Scholarship and the Give Something Back Foundation Teacher Award are being sponsored by Robert and Jill Carr, founders of the family foundation.

The Carrs have made many donations over the years to fund scholarships in surrounding areas.  In 2002, the family gave $100,000 to initiate a scholarship fund for Lockport high school students.  As a student at Lockport High School, Robert Carr received a college scholarship.  This prompted him to want to give back to students who have financial need; therefore he and his wife created this generous foundation.

“The Carrs' foundation is in the process of establishing other projects to help more students, including students in grade school,” said Steve Cardamone, president of the Give Something Back Foundation. “The family has made a very strong commitment to education in the immediate area," Cardamone said.

One Providence Catholic student will receive a $20,000 college scholarship paid over four years.  “The scholarship is available for students with a good academic history and show financial need for college,” said Don Sebestyen, Principal of Providence Catholic.  Applications for the scholarship are now available at the school.

Furthermore, one Providence Catholic faculty member will be chosen for the Give Something Back Teacher Award.  Faculty may be nominated by students and fellow faculty members.   The chosen faculty member will receive a $2,500 Teacher Award.  “The Give Something Back Foundation is proud to provide teachers with a monetary grant for their dedication to students that often extends beyond regular classroom expectations,” said Cardemone.

“We're excited about this partnership with the Give Something Back Foundation,” said Ed Barrett, Development Director at Providence Catholic.  “It is the school’s hope that our alumni who are looking for ways to give something back, will also initiate scholarship opportunities for our students and dedicated faculty.”

Anyone interested in setting up a scholarship to fund a Providence Catholic High School student may contact Ed Barrett at ebarrett@providencecatholic.org or call (815) 485-2136, ext. 521.
