Providence Catholic Hosts College Fair
(New Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School recently hosted thirty-five colleges and universities to be a part of its annual “Mini-College Fair.” Sophomore and junior students, along with parents were able to obtain specific information that will help students begin narrowing their choices for schools to attend upon graduation. Because Providence Catholic annually sends 98% of its graduates on to higher education, this was an important day for these students and parents.
Upon entering the fair, students were given a list of possible questions to ask the various school representatives; however, this list was used by students simply as a reference. Pam Ryan, PCHS Director of Guidance, was happy to comment on the positive feedback that she received from school representatives. “We received a number of compliments from the college representatives on the enthusiasm of our students and their desire to learn more about the college selection process. Furthermore, the representatives remarked on the benefits of including sophomores and parents in the college fair,” stated Ryan.
In addition to the college fair, Providence Catholic hosts a number of representatives from national colleges and universities throughout the school year to help students explore as many academic options as possible.

Foundation “Gives Something Back” at Providence Catholic
(New Lenox) - The Give Something Back Foundation will sponsor two special awards at Providence Catholic High School this spring. The Give Something Back Scholarship and the Give Something Back Foundation Teacher Award are being sponsored by Robert and Jill Carr, founders of the family foundation.
The Carrs have made many donations over the years to fund scholarships in surrounding areas. In 2002, the family gave $100,000 to initiate a scholarship fund for Lockport high school students. As a student at Lockport High School, Robert Carr received a college scholarship. This prompted him to want to give back to students who have financial need; therefore he and his wife created this generous foundation.
“The Carrs' foundation is in the process of establishing other projects to help more students, including students in grade school,” said Steve Cardamone, president of the Give Something Back Foundation. “The family has made a very strong commitment to education in the immediate area," Cardamone said.
One Providence Catholic student will receive a $20,000 college scholarship paid over four years. “The scholarship is available for students with a good academic history and show financial need for college,” said Don Sebestyen, Principal of Providence Catholic. Applications for the scholarship are now available at the school.
Furthermore, one Providence Catholic faculty member will be chosen for the Give Something Back Teacher Award. Faculty may be nominated by students and fellow faculty members. The chosen faculty member will receive a $2,500 Teacher Award. “The Give Something Back Foundation is proud to provide teachers with a monetary grant for their dedication to students that often extends beyond regular classroom expectations,” said Cardemone.
“We're excited about this partnership with the Give Something Back Foundation,” said Ed Barrett, Development Director at Providence Catholic. “It is the school’s hope that our alumni who are looking for ways to give something back, will also initiate scholarship opportunities for our students and dedicated faculty.”
Anyone interested in setting up a scholarship to fund a Providence Catholic High School student may contact Ed Barrett at ebarrett@providencecatholic.org or call (815) 485-2136, ext. 521.

Matt Senffner Retires From Providence Catholic
(New Lenox) - Matt Senffner announced his retirement yesterday after 38 years as head varsity football coach and athletic director of Providence Catholic High School. Senffner with 300 varsity victories is the winningest head football coach in Illinois history. He started the Providence football program in 1966 and was named head football coach in 1968. His teams have won 300 games while losing only 114, with 1 tie. Senffner has coached more than 1,200 football players in his career.
Under his guidance, the Celtics have made 25 playoff appearances, 3-time quarter finalists, 1-time semi-finalist, 2 second place finishes, and 9 State Championships (1987, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002, and 2004). In addition, the Celtics have been in the State Championship game nine of the last twelve years. During the four year championship run from ‘94-‘97, Providence had a 50 game winning streak. Coach Senffner has had his team nationally ranked 7 times.
Senffner taught Biology for 23 years at Providence Catholic and served as Athletic Director for the last 30 years. During that time the school's athletic teams have won 24 IHSA State Championships. More over, two of his former players played in the NFL. This past spring, Senffner was enshrined into the Providence Catholic Athletic Association Hall of Fame, which honored him for his dedication to Providence Catholic and coaching.
“We are saddened that Coach Senffner will no longer be working with us to influence and shape the lives and futures of our student athletes and to provide them with coaching expertise and leadership which has resulted in such extraordinary success for the Providence Catholic athletic programs over many, many years,” said Fr. Richard J. McGrath, OSA, President of Providence Catholic High School. “We are grateful to Coach Senffner for his innumerable sacrifices, countless hours of devotion and service, and the enormous influence which he has had on Providence Catholic High School, its students, faculty, families and athletic programs.”
The school will begin the search for a new football coach and a new athletic director immediately. For any additional information, please contact Fr. Richard McGrath at (815) 485-2136.

Providence Catholic Announces November Students of the Month

Providence Catholic Honors Two Couples at the Second Annual Cor Unum Awards Presentation
(New Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School Women’s Club hosted “Harvest Our Hearts,” a dinner dance/auction and the Second Annual Cor Unum Awards Presentation on November 5 at DiNolfo’s Banquets in Mokena. Nearly 400 guests gathered to honor Mr. and Mrs. “Bitz” Brown and Mr. and Mrs. Scott Reiter, who were awarded the Cor Unum Medallion for their dedication and service to Providence Catholic.
Bishop Roger Kaffer and Rev. John Merkelis, O.S.A. presented the prestigious medallions that encompass the Kairos cross with the heart, flame and arrow of the Augustinian crest embossed over it. The motto, “Cor Unum” is Latin for “one heart.” On the reverse side of the medallion the inscription reads "One Heart...in Ministry...in Mission...in Family."
“These four wonderful people personify the meaning of ‘Cor Unum’ through their generosity of many kinds and tireless efforts to help Providence Catholic become the school it is today; a community of believers working toward the common goals of providing a safe and healthy environment for students to grow spiritually, academically and socially,” offered Rev. Richard McGrath, O.S.A., President of Providence Catholic High School.
In addition, the Women’s Club held silent and live auctions, which generated more than $30,000 to benefit the students at Providence Catholic. These proceeds will be applied toward capital and technological improvements that will allow students to have access to the latest software, hardware and resources.

Providence Catholic’s Fall
Harvest Drive Exceeds All
Expectations
(New Lenox) – In late
September, Providence
Catholic High School held
its Annual Fall Harvest
Drive, which was initiated
in 1968 to raise funds for
the school, due to a serious
financial crisis. Desperate
to prevent Providence from
closing its doors, the
school held a car raffle and
carnival that generated
$15,000 the first year and
$32,000 the following year.
Pleased by the results of
this fund-raising effort,
the Joliet Diocese decided
to keep the doors open.
Since then, the three-week
fundraiser has grown to
generate more than $300,000
annually to help offset
tuition and general
operating costs for the
school.
Through the hard work of
students, parents, teachers
and other members of the
Providence community, this
year’s Fall Harvest Drive
generated nearly $400,000,
breaking all previous
Harvest Drive totals. The
$10,000 grand prize raffle
winner was 1980 Providence
alumna, Rhonda
Sefcik-Tempinski of New
Lenox. Tempinski generously
donated a portion of her
winnings back to the school
to benefit students with
financial need.
This year’s top-selling
student was junior M.J.
Moore, who brought in
$7,200, which earned him
free tuition for the second
semester. The annual
fun-filled Harvest Drive
Olympics took place prior to
the Grand Prize Raffle
Drawing, where Student
Council President, Tim Foody,
smashed a pie in Fr.
Merkelis’ face after his
name was randomly chosen
(see attached photos).
“It is truly amazing how
much pride Providence
students have for their
school. That is what this
fundraiser is all about. It
really says a lot about the
students, parents, teachers
and community on how they
feel about our school,”
offered Jamie O'Brien, PCHS
Harvest Drive Coordinator.
To be able to generate that
amount of money and support,
not only in such a short
period of time, but with the
way that the economy has
been struggling is truly
inspiring.”
