Billy Hultgen Memorial Golf Outing to Benefit Providence Catholic Students

(New Lenox) - Providence Catholic High School is pleased to invite you and your family to attend the Billy Hultgen Memorial Golf Outing, which will take place on Thursday, August 9 at Gleneagles Country Club in Lemont.  In March of 1995, tragedy struck the Providence Catholic community with a terrible car accident that claimed the life of Billy Hultgen.  Billy was a junior at PCHS and known for his “Celtic Spirit,” generosity and positive attitude.  He was a hard working student and a talented athlete.  Even in death, Billy continued to display these admirable qualities by donating his organs and giving the gift of life to several strangers.  In honor of this admirable young man, his family established the Billy Hultgen Memorial Fund in 1995, which donates all proceeds to benefit the education of Providence Catholic students with financial need.  By participating in this event, you will be helping students in need and helping the memory of Billy to live on.  If you are unable to take part in this event, but would like to help, monetary donations are welcome.  For more details, visit the official website at www.donateforbilly.org.

Providence Catholic hosts 3rd Annual Poetry Slam

(New Lenox)  Providence Catholic High School hosted their 3rd Annual Poetry Slam on April 18.  Initiated by Ms. Soteria Papagiannopoulos, PCHS Librarian and Ms. Mary Colbert, PCHS English Teacher, the poetry slam has grown from a few participants the first couple years to 20 participants this year.  With an audience of more than 60 students, faculty and parents, the poets recited both original and published works.

Ms. Papagiannopoulos said, “We began the slams as a way of celebrating “National Poetry Month” in April. We continued the slam because we were amazed at the poems students wrote and this gave them a venue in which to share their poems with their peers.  Poetry is for the heart and the spirit. It expresses the inexpressible; the poet is able to express what we all feel and yearn in our souls but are unable to put into words.  As the great American poet, William Carlos Williams, wrote:

'It is difficult to get the news from poems

Yet men die miserably every day

For lack of what is found there’.”

Freshman Keyana Kirkland of Joliet took 1st place for reciting “Phenomenal Woman” by Maya Angelou. Freshman Danon Salonis-McGrew of Joliet received 1st place for his original poem entitled “Welcome to Reality”.  Congratulations to all the young men and women who shared their poetry.

Providence Catholic students celebrate "Pi Day"

(New Lenox) – Ms. Jennifer Moore, Providence Catholic High School Math teacher, celebrated “Pi Day” with her students in mid-March.  During her Algebra and Trigonometry classes, Moore had her students perform several activities to discover the origins of pi.  The students also watched a brief slide show, which revealed the history of pi.

By definition, pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is 3.14159265358979323846. Pi is always the same number, no matter which circle you use to compute it.  “Throughout the class period, students used pi on common circular objects such as pop bottles, crayons and pizza to determine the area of the object,” said Moore.  “These activities allowed students the opportunity to connect mathematical discoveries to everyday objects and gain insight into the ancient cultures that discovered pi.”

Providence Catholic High School Reaches Out to a Family in Need

(New Lenox) – When Jeff Grigoletti, President of Providence Catholic Band Parents Club learned of a family who had lost their home to a fire, he knew just the thing to do.  With the support of Fr. Richard J. McGrath, O.S.A., the school’s President, the Ramey family of Carol Stream was offered “first pick” of the items to be sold at the Band Parents Club 3rd Annual Rummage Sale on June 30 and July 1.

In late May, the Ramey’s house was struck by lightening, which resulted in a devastating fire that destroyed their home.  Despite severe physical damage to the home and its contents, one item remained intact.  Remarkably, the family Bible was left untouched by flames that had consumed the dresser on which it was placed.  “I found the Bible where I left it, on the dresser, completely undamaged.  Seeing that Bible was when I decided that I was thankful for what we still have,” commented Laura Ramey.

On June 29, Laura Ramey was invited to Providence Catholic to select items for her family, which were offered free of charge.  Laura, along with her friend Michelle Chafer and her children Nicole and Anthony, graciously accepted the generosity of the school.  “We are so grateful for all of this.  I can not believe the support that we have received from perfect strangers,” said Ramey.

The first item that caught the eye of Laura Ramey was a picture of a floral arrangement.  “This picture meant something to me; it reminded me of my back yard,” commented Ramey with tears in her eyes.  At the moment Laura, her husband, her three children and three grandchildren are living at a Holiday Inn.  Anyone interested in helping this family may contact Michelle Chafer at (630) 690-5396 or email cmichelle@mindspring.com.
