Providence Catholic Students Earn Advanced Placement Awards

Providence Catholic High School principal Dr. John Harper announced that 42 students earned Advanced Placement Awards by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams. Eleven are current seniors and 31 are members of the class of 2020. “We are extremely proud of these talented young men and women who strive for academic excellence,” said Harper.

At Providence, twenty-nine students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of at least a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.  Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 of higher on four or more of these exams. Ten students were Scholars with Distinction for receiving an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP exams. Generally about 18 percent students worldwide who take AP exams perform at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.  AP is accepted by more than 3,800 colleges and universities worldwide. Research consistently shows that AP students who score a 3 or higher on AP exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.  Providence Catholic offers 18 Advanced Placement classes.
