Junior Katherine Timm Scores Perfect 36 on the ACT
NEW LENOX (October 11, 2023) – Katherine Timm, a junior at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, earned a perfect 36 on the ACT test. Timm, the daughter of Mr. Kevin Timm and Mrs. Margo Singletary-Timm of Joliet, has plans to go study history in college, likely with a minor in math or design. Her goal is to work as a curator in a museum. She is a graduate of St. Joseph School, Lockport.
Fewer than half of one percent of the 1.3 million students who take the ACT earn a top score.
“I prepared for the ACT by taking the Pre-ACT 8/9 and Pre-ACT at Providence. I also did practice tests out of the official Princeton Review ACT prep book,” says Timm. “Providence helped me prepare for the ACT by offering the Pre-ACT 8/9 and the Pre-ACT my freshman and sophomore years, respectively, and by teaching the English, math, and science skills I needed for the test. For the rest of the school year, I hope to maintain good grades, to score highly on the PSAT and my AP Exams, become captain of the scholastic bowl team, and for our scholastic bowl team to win our regional.”

Katherine is diligent in her work and devotes time to many other facets at Providence, in addition to being a kind and thoughtful individual.”
At Providence, Timm is a dedicated member of the band/percussion ensemble, which is currently in competition season. She is on the Math Team and Scholastic Bowl Team, writes for the Proviscope newspaper, and is a member of the Forensics Club and Girls Support Girls Club. She is also a member of the Spanish Honor Society and the Music Honor Society.
“I think all my teachers have been inspirational, but three in particular stand out,” says Timm. “Mrs. Walker, my geometry teacher and math team coach, has inspired me to think about problems creatively and break challenging tasks down into easier steps. Ms. Gura, my English 1 Honors and AP English Language teacher, has inspired me to work hard and put thought into whatever I write. Finally, Mr. Freeman, my AP US History teacher, has inspired me to think critically about history and analyze different perspectives whenever I learn about events.”
The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science, each scored on a scale of 1–36. A student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. The score for ACT’s optional writing test is reported separately and is not included within the ACT composite score.
The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. Students who earn a 36 composite score have likely mastered all of the skills and knowledge they will need to succeed in first-year college courses in the core subject areas.
