Providence Catholic Champions Biliteracy for Student Success

Providence Catholic High School’s (PCHS) dedication to developing linguistic skills among its students has reached a significant milestone with its Spanish Program, which supports the Seal of Biliteracy initiative. This esteemed program aims to acknowledge and reward students who exhibit proficiency in multiple languages upon graduating high school.

Under the leadership of Lara DeVries, Chair of the World Languages Department and Spanish Teacher at PCHS, the Spanish curriculum has been strategically refined to enhance students’ reading abilities and assist them in achieving the esteemed Seal of Biliteracy.

DeVries explained the Department’s goal: “The goal of the World Language Department is to ensure that graduating seniors, who have taken four years of Honors language instruction, exit our program at the Intermediate High proficiency level, which means they can handle tasks and exchange information related to work, school, and other situations with native speakers.”

The results have been remarkable. Among seniors and juniors in Spanish 4 Honors, a remarkable 89% reached the Intermediate High proficiency level in reading. Likewise, in Spanish 3 Honors, which mainly includes sophomores and juniors, 84% of test-takers achieved the same proficiency level, exceeding their target. These results highlight the significant advancements made due to curriculum changes, such as reading and studying novels about the Cuban Revolution and the Spanish Civil War.

The Seal of Biliteracy is of great significance for students, as it not only encourages the pursuit of bilingualism but also serves as concrete proof of their language skills, which are highly regarded by potential employers and college admissions offices.

By emphasizing language proficiency, PCHS is preparing its students with vital skills for an increasingly globalized world, while upholding its mission to provide rigorous and relevant programming aligned with the Augustinian values of Truth, Unity, and Love.
