Providence Catholic Names Varsity Wrestling Coach

(New Lenox) – Providence Catholic High School Athletic Director, Doug Ternik, named Donny Reynolds as the school’s new varsity wrestling coach. Reynolds is one of the most highly respected and decorated wrestling coaches in the state of Illinois.

As a 2002 graduate of Providence Catholic High School, Reynolds was a three-time Chicago Catholic League Champion and earned All-State honors in wrestling, winning two individual state championships and four IHSA Dual Team State Championships. He was also undefeated in 2002 and named a USA Wrestling All-American.

Reynolds was the 2003 Junior National Champion and World Team Member, placing 7th in the Junior World Championships.

Reynolds attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. During his college career, he was a 2-time Midlands placer, 2-time Big Ten Championship placer, and a 2-time NCAA Qualifier. During Reynolds collegiate career, he helped the Fighting Illini capture the 2005 Big Ten Conference team title.

Reynolds started coaching after college and assisted at Providence Catholic where he helped lead the Celtics to a 2nd place finish in the 2008 IHSA Dual Team State Championship. Reynolds coached for USA Wrestling (Team Illinois) and was a part of the staff who coached more than 25 USA Wrestling age-group National Championships since 2003.

In 2012 Reynolds became the Head Wrestling coach at Marmion Academy. As their head coach, the Marmion wrestling team was named IHSA Regional and Sectional Champions and made it to the IHSA State Meet (2nd place in 2013, 3rd place in 2014, 2nd Place in 2016). Reynolds has won many coaching awards from the IHSA and the Chicago Catholic League during his coaching career as well named the IHSA Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Reynolds is looking forward to returning to his roots to make a positive impact with the team. “I am excited for the opportunity to be back home,” he said. “It is exciting to get to continue the tradition of what is Providence Catholic wrestling.”

Coach Ternik is glad to welcome Reynolds back to the Providence Catholic coaching staff. “We are very excited to have one of our own alumni Donny Reynolds return to Providence Catholic as the head coach of our wrestling program,” he said. “Reynolds knows and understands the tradition of instilling values and hard work in our young athletes to not only become good wrestlers but to also become good men.”

The Providence Catholic Wrestling team has been under the leadership of coaching legend Keith Healy for the last 26 years. It is during this time that the Celtics had 14 State appearances and finished in the top four each of those state appearances. Reynolds hopes to continue with the winning tradition as he comes back “home” to lead the Celtics to success.
