Two Providence Catholic Student-Athletes Make Division I College Commitments to Continue Athletic and Academic Careers

NEW LENOX (December 20, 2017) – Mr. Doug Ternik, Athletic Director of Providence Catholic High School, is pleased to announce that two senior student-athletes will continue their football careers at Division I collegiate level. “We are extremely proud of these two young men for their hard work both in the classroom and on the field. We wish them the very best in college and in the future,” said Ternik. 
De’Shon Gavin of Joliet, son of Corey and Jennifer Gavin has signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his football career at Western Illionis University on athletic and academic scholarship. He plans to major in Computer Science and minor in Cyber Security or Business. Gavin is a graduate of Laraway Elementry School in Joliet. Gavin has been an honors student and a member of the football, track team for all four years. He has also been a member of the basketball, student council, AYM, Science Club, Diversity Club, Law Club and a Sacristan. During his four years, Gavin was awarded Most Valuable Player, All-Conference (Chicago Catholic League Blue) Football, IHSA 6A All-State Team, All-Area Offensive Player of the Year, WJOL Offensive Player of the Year, Herald News Offensive Player of the Year, and United State Army Combine Invitation.
Gavin credits Providence Catholic High School for his success on and off the field, “At Providence, I feel like I have found a home,” he said “with help from God and as well as my family, friends, coaches, and teammates who have pushed me to my potential and made me the man that I am today. They have instilled in me the motivation and determination that if anyone tells you that you cannot do something, you have the power to tell them they’re wrong.”
Mariano Sori-Marin of Mokena, son of Mariano and Katrina Sori-Marin has signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his football career at the University of Minnesota on athletic scholarship. He plans to major in Business Finance and minor in Economics. Sori-Marin is a graduate from Noonan Elementary Academy in Mokena. He has been an honors student for all four years and a member of the football, track team. Sori-Marin is also a part of NHS, National Spanish Honor Society and is a Sacristan. During his four years, Sori-Marin was awarded Most Valuable Player on Defense, All Conference (Chicago Catholic League Blue), IHSA 6A All State Team, Illinois State Scholar, and All State Academic Player of the Year.
Sori-Marin is excited to bring what he has learned at Providence Catholic to the University of Minnesota next fall, “Providence has allowed me to be a part of one of the top football programs in the area”, he said, “it has also prepared me academically with the college-prep academics and schedule that I will carry with me to Minnesota.”
