Cardinal Robert Prevost, O.S.A., Announced as New Pope

We are honored and overjoyed to share the historic news that Cardinal Robert Prevost—Chicago-area native, current Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, and a cherished guest of Providence Catholic this past August—has been elected as the next pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV is the first American in the history of the Catholic Church to be elected to the papacy, marking a moment of profound significance for the Church in the United States and around the world. His recent visit to Providence Catholic in August, during which he celebrated a special Mass for our Celtic community, makes this announcement all the more meaningful to us.

He is also the first Augustinian pope!
We join the global Catholic community in prayer and thanksgiving as we welcome Pope Leo XIV and look ahead with hope and faith.
