Celtic Spotlight: Junior Faith Rick
Finding Purpose Through Faith, Service, and Love
For Providence Catholic junior Faith Rick, serving others is more than an opportunity to make a difference. It is a calling rooted in her faith, a source of personal fulfillment, and a way to share God’s love with those around her.
Inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus, Faith has made service an important part of her everyday life, finding ways to help others through both organized volunteer opportunities and simple acts of kindness.
“By studying Jesus’ life in the Bible and during theology class, His actions have shown me that part of life’s purpose is leading people to God through serving others,” Faith shared. “When I know that I am serving others, it reminds me of my life’s purpose.”
Faith’s commitment to service has taken many forms. She has volunteered with Feed My Starving Children, assisted with fish fries at her former school, created locker signs to brighten her classmates’ days, and written what she calls “just because” letters, offering unexpected words of encouragement and appreciation to others.
One of her most meaningful experiences came during the Christmas season when Faith and her mother collected toys and other belongings from their home to donate to a family who needed help providing Christmas gifts for their children.
Afterward, Faith received a photograph of the children opening their presents, a moment that left a lasting impression.
“My heart truly warmed in that moment because of the smiles and happiness the gifts brought them,” she recalled.
Experiences like these have helped Faith recognize that making a difference does not always require a large project or an organized event. Sometimes, the smallest gestures can have the greatest impact.
“Service doesn’t have to be a big, grand event,” Faith explained. “Helping others could be building houses for people or even just picking up a pencil for someone. Anyone can show service by doing little everyday things.”
As her passion for helping others has grown, Faith has felt called to take her commitment even further. She is currently working to establish a service group at her parish that would bring people together each month to volunteer and support those in need.
She and her mother are also planning and saving for an international mission trip, where they hope to extend their service beyond their local community.
For Faith, these goals reflect something she has come to understand about herself through her experiences.
“God has shown me that doing service for others is my life’s calling,” she said.
Faith also sees a strong connection between her commitment to helping others and Providence Catholic’s Augustinian values of Truth, Unity, and Love.
Through service, she believes people can build meaningful connections, restore hope, and remind one another of the goodness that exists in the world. Above all, she sees love in the willingness to sacrifice personal time and comfort for the benefit of someone else.
“I think sacrificing things is one of the most beautiful ways of showing love to others,” she shared.
When asked what advice she would give other students who are considering getting involved in service, Faith encourages them to take that first step and, most importantly, recognize the impact their kindness can have.
“Nothing has ever brought me a bigger smile than seeing the reactions people have to feeling loved,” she said. “I truly believe that by doing service for others, it gives you a new perspective on what God has always wanted us to do: serve others.”
Through her compassion, initiative, and commitment to living her faith, Faith demonstrates that service is not simply something we do. It is a way of life, one that reflects the Augustinian values at the heart of Providence Catholic and reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.
