Celtic Spotlight: Senior Alex Diaz
For senior Alex Diaz, creating the Latin American Cultural Union of Providence (LACU) was about more than starting a new club – it was about creating a space for culture, connection, and understanding.
Alex founded LACU just over a year ago as a way for students of all backgrounds to experience the rich cultures and traditions of Latin America while giving Latino and Hispanic students a place to celebrate and share their own heritage.

Since then, the club has grown to more than 80 members, becoming one of Providence Catholic’s most popular extracurricular activities. Through presentations, games, food, music, and hands-on activities, Alex has introduced members to more than a dozen topics, ranging from Portuguese basics to Mexican Christmas posadas. Members have also sampled foods from throughout Latin America, including empanadas, Puerto Rican pastries, pozole, tacos, and Brazilian brigadeiros.
“One of the best aspects is that everyone is always attentive and interactive,” Alex said. “It makes each meeting feel like a celebration everyone shares and has a part in.”
Now in his senior year, Alex is looking ahead to LACU’s future. With a team of student leaders helping guide the club this year, he hopes they will continue what he started long after he graduates – building on its success while continuing to spark curiosity about the diversity, traditions, and beauty of Latin America.
For Alex, LACU has grown from a simple idea into a community – and a legacy he hopes will remain part of Providence Catholic for years to come.
