Providence Catholic High School Holds 27th Annual College Fair

(NEW LENOX, IL) Providence Catholic High School begins preparing its students for college early in their high school careers. The school held its 27th annual College Fair for students and their parents on Friday, April 20.

The fair featured more than 50 colleges and universities. The College Fair is a convenient way for students to find materials and speak with a college or university representative, many of whom are the ones reviewing applications, according to Providence Catholic High School Counseling Director, Pam Ryan.

Providence Catholic counselors encourage students to select a few colleges to consider. Counselors work with the students to identify if the university is a right fit for them. Students receive coaching on how to best present themselves to the university representatives who could be reviewing applicants. All of this is a part of the Providence advantage says Frank Palmasani, high school college counselor and author of “Right College, Right Price.”

Sophomore, Gabrielle Baffes took full advantage of the opportunity to visit the schools she plans to apply to next year. “I think this is a really good opportunity to ask questions about the application process,” she said.

Baffes plans to apply to Merrimack College, University of Illinois, University of Notre Dame, and St. Ambrose University. “I knew early on that I wanted to go somewhere on the East Coast,” said Baffes. “With Merrimack College being an Augustinian school, I feel like it would be the perfect fit for me coming from Providence.”

Some of the 50 college and universities included, University of Illinois, Bradley University, DePaul University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Loyola University, University of Alabama, University of Dayton, University of Iowa, Indiana University, Eastern Illinois University, Creighton University, and Xavier University, Ohio.

Two hundred seventy-seven seniors comprised the most recent graduating class and 99% enrolled in a college or university. In addition, nearly $40 million college scholarships were offered to the PCHS Class of 2017 with those graduates attending some of the most highly selective schools in the country including Boston University, University of Michigan, United States Naval Academy, Villanova University and the University of Notre Dame. Providence Catholic students receive a higher percentage of acceptance offers for the most selective schools.
