Hockey Team Pays Tribute To Humboldt Broncos

The Providence Catholic Hockey Team gathered together Thursday morning before school to pray and honor the sixteen people who died when a bus carrying the Humboldt Junior Hockey Team collided with a semi-trailer 124 miles north-east of Saskatoon last Friday night. Police said 29 people were on the bus. Ten players, the driver, two coaches, a volunteer statistician, the team athletic trainer and a play-by-play announcer were killed.

Thursday, April 12 has been earmarked as #JerseyDay to honor those who lost their lives in the crash. The initiative #JerseysforHumboldt was proposed on Facebook by a group of hockey parents in British Columbia as a way to honor the Saskatchewan junior hockey team.

Providence Catholic Hockey captain, Chris Clement knew this tragedy hit close to home for his team and wanted to pay tribute in a special way. “We are all with them,” he said, “we all come from different hockey teams but when something like this happens it does not matter what team you play for; the name on the front of our jerseys falls off and we come together as one.”

Thousands worldwide have pledged to take part in the so-called Jersey Day, which encourages people to wear a sports jersey, hockey or otherwise. That includes commitments from schools, sports teams, and businesses big and small.

“It does not matter what part of the globe we come from, we rally together and have each other’s back, we are brothers,” said Clement.
