Celtic Spotlight: Junior Elizabeth Fleming
What started as a setback turned into an unexpected opportunity for Providence Catholic junior Elizabeth Fleming, who transformed an injury into a standout summer competing in USA Track & Field Junior Olympics competition.
Elizabeth’s plans changed suddenly in May when she broke her ankle while competing in the 300-meter hurdles at conference. Unable to run or participate in physical activity for nearly a month and a half, she had to temporarily step away from hurdles. But once she was cleared to compete again, Elizabeth wasn’t ready to let the injury define her season.

Instead, she turned her attention to two events she had gained some experience with during the high school track season: shot put and discus.
Competing over the summer with Prestige Athletic Club out of Joliet, Elizabeth began at local meets and quickly found success. She advanced to the Illinois Junior Olympics, where she placed fifth in shot put and eighth in discus, earning the opportunity to continue to the Regional Junior Olympics. At regionals, she finished eighth in shot put and 11th in discus, competing against a talented field that included state champions.
For Elizabeth, the accomplishments meant even more after spending weeks unable to compete.
“I think I was so determined to have an amazing summer season because I wasn’t able to do any physical activity for a month and a half,” Elizabeth said. “I just wanted to make the most of the time I had in the summer. I wanted to make my coaches and teammates proud and prove to myself that I can be injured but come back and make the most of it.”
Along the way, Elizabeth discovered something she hadn’t expected: a new passion for throwing.
While she had already enjoyed shot put during the high school season, she quickly fell in love with discus. Her progress was remarkable. In just one week between meets, Elizabeth improved her discus personal record by seven meters—approximately 25 feet. That throw helped her qualify for the Regional Junior Olympics.
“I’ll never forget the proud look on my coach’s face when I hit my huge personal record she had been helping me train for,” Elizabeth said.
Just as meaningful as her success in competition were the relationships Elizabeth formed with her Prestige Athletic Club teammates. Despite joining the team after its summer season had already begun, she said her teammates immediately welcomed her and became an important part of her experience.
“My biggest takeaway was connecting with my teammates so much,” she said. “We got close quickly, and they welcomed me with open arms. I still talk to them often even when we aren’t in season because they did so much for me and made my summer better.”
Elizabeth’s road to the Junior Olympics wasn’t the summer she originally envisioned when she began her track season. But an injury that temporarily took her away from one event ultimately helped her discover a talent and passion for two others—and gave her the opportunity to prove just how much can come from making the most of an unexpected challenge.
Congratulations, Elizabeth, on an incredible summer and for representing the Celtic community so well!
