Tuesday Jan. 23: Remote Learning Day

1/23/14

Message from Mr. Houston, school principal:

At 4:42 a.m. today I was contacted by our director of transportation, who informed me there would be no buses available today. She and her drivers are unable to get to the buses due to freezing rain and extremely icy roads. Given the lack of drivers, and the unsafe conditions for drivers of any kind, Providence Catholic High School will shift to remote learning for Tuesday, January 23. Staff and students should remain home for the day. Teachers will provide instruction, materials, and learning experiences through Microsoft Teams. All students are required to read the directions on the Teams pages for each class they have.

This will not be a synchronous learning day. Teachers will provide instruction via readings, activities, assignments, videos, screencasts, or other means. Teachers may give assignments and assessments, and teachers are to be available to students for questions or assistance at times the teacher determines between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Teachers can communicate with students via Teams Chat or conduct individual or group Teams Calls.

Students will be allowed flexibility in when they take assessments. Any assignments or assessments should be due no sooner than 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 24.

The service trip to the Northern Illinois Food Bank is cancelled.

  • Academic Support: Teacher will post their “office hours” during which they will be available online for questions and assistance; students can contact them via Teams message, or a Teams call.
  • Tech Support:  The Tech Office staff will be available from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM.  Email techhelp@providencecatholic.org, and remain online while you wait for a response.
  • Athletics:  Students and parents should check our Snap site for updates to their schedules.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding. Stay safe!

Addendum

As an update to this morning’s notification of remote learning today, I want to inform you of the following:

  1. Per policies and guidelines from the Joliet Diocese and the Illinois State Board of Education, when we provide e-learning instruction for students that day counts as a day of instruction and does not need to be made up. In accordance with ISBE, the CSO will allow up to 5 e-learning days to be used per school year. We have now used three e-learning days this school year.
  2. The daily bell schedules for the rest of this week will remain as planned. Wednesday C schedule, Thursday B schedule, and Friday A schedule (with Celtic Time).
  3. Because the shift to remote was due to transportation issues that will not apply this afternoon and we are still providing instruction, extracurricular activities may take place after school today as planned. Moderators and coaches may communicate any updates, changes, or cancellations as necessary.
